Lechería, Anzoátegui – Committed to creating safe spaces and with the goal of improving access to healthcare for Venezuelans, the Venemergencia Foundation installed the first automated external defibrillator (AED) in eastern Venezuela. Thanks to this device and the support of the Diego Bautista Urbaneja municipal government, Puerto Príncipe Square in Lechería is now a heart-safe zone.
The inaugural event was attended by the mayor of the Diego Bautista Urbaneja municipality, Manuel Ferreira, who was accompanied by representatives of the municipal government and local law enforcement agencies. With this step, Lechería has become a leading city in public safety and preventive health.
A Leader in Preventive Health in the Eastern Part of the Country
During the event, Mayor Ferreira highlighted the importance of public education and announced expansion plans for this initiative in the municipality: “Through Civil Protection, we will organize workshops so that citizens participating in programs like ‘Lechería en Forma’ can learn how this equipment works and understand how to be part of the solution in a crisis situation. We will continue working hand in hand with Venemergencia, with the goal of making Plaza del Parque the next location to have these defibrillators.”
For his part, Dr. Andrés Simón González-Silén, founding partner and executive director of Venemergencia, highlighted the social impact of this achievement: “We are deeply proud to be part of this community and to see the example of motivation they are setting for the country. This is our way of contributing and of reminding everyone that we must work together to ensure greater access to healthcare for all Venezuelans.”
Community Training for an Immediate Response
As an integral part of the event, the Venemergencia Foundation conducted Basic Life Support courses for local residents. These hands-on sessions taught the community how to respond promptly to a cardiovascular emergency and how to correctly use an AED to save lives while waiting for specialized medical personnel to arrive.
Automated external defibrillators are designed to be used by any member of the public, drastically reducing response times in the event of a cardiac arrest. Through this initiative, the Venemergencia Foundation, via its Public Access Defibrillation (PAD) program, reaffirmed its commitment to the well-being of Venezuelans and demonstrated that training and innovation are essential tools for building communities prepared for any pre-hospital emergency.
